Introduced earlier this week, the brand-new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE is the most powerful S-Class ever built, but it is a lot more than that. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most powerful sedans ever and a flagship luxury performance PHEV vehicle that has the ability to compete with exotic vehicles both in a straight line and around corners. On the other hand, it also delivers everything buyers want from their S-Class including exceptional comfort, a quiet interior complete with premium materials, and the latest and best technologies to improve safety, connectivity, and the onboard experience.


Remarkable power from a plug-in hybrid powertrain


The base engine powering the all-new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE is the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 we've seen in many AMG models including the previous S-Class. It develops 612 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. However,  AMG engineers have paired this already ultra-powerful powertrain with an electric motor with 188 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque mounted on the rear axle. Ultimately, the new S 63 E PERFORMANCE sends 791 horsepower to the road, and a remarkable 1,055 pound-feet of torque. AMG predicts a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.3 seconds which is simply stunning for a full-size sedan so spacious and luxurious.


To power the rear electric motor, a 13.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack has also been grafted onto the full-size sedan. More than a simple battery, it was developed with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. The 400-volt battery consists of 1,200 cells, all of which are individually cooled. Doing so ensures that the battery temperature is always optimal to deliver the highest level of performance and preserve battery life as well.

The presence of this second electric motor at the rear also ensures that the S 63 E PERFORMANCE has an all-wheel drive system, which is fully variable to better respond to multiple driving situations. It should also be noted that the S 63 AMG can take advantage of four-wheel drive in all situations, even when the electric mode is engaged. As for the transmission, the automaker once again relies on its nine-speed automatic unit, a component that is found throughout AMG’s lineup.


In addition to all the hardware under the hood and under the body, the impressive S 63 PERFORMANCE promises to be more dynamic in terms of driving, thanks to new active engine mounts. The latter have the ability to vary their stiffness by adapting to the current driving situation. In other words, the S 63 E PERFORMANCE has the ability to shift from a super rigid setup for performance driving to a softer response for a more composed, comfortable ride. This is the first time the brand's engineers have used this technology on a production model, and it's likely not the last.
