Mercedes-Benz Embraces North American Charging Standard
August 29 2023,
Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to supercharge its electrification journey, announcing a significant move to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its electric vehicle (EV) lineup starting in 2025. This initiative not only signals Mercedes-Benz's commitment to providing consumers with advanced EV charging solutions but also demonstrates the automaker's intent to make EV adoption easier and more accessible.
Greater EV Charging Infrastructure
Starting in 2024, Mercedes-Benz drivers will be granted access to Tesla's expansive Supercharger network, which boasts over 12,000 charging stations across North America. This partnership provides Mercedes-Benz owners with a vast network of charging options, promoting both convenience and the viability of EV ownership.
Alongside this, Mercedes-Benz is doubling down on its charging infrastructure commitment, revealing plans to roll out its own dedicated Mercedes-Benz Charging Network. With an ambitious target of launching more than 2,500 high-power chargers across North America, the company aims to redefine the EV charging experience. The brand is set to inaugurate its first high-power charging sites in the fourth quarter of 2023, and these sites will welcome both Mercedes-Benz and other EV brand owners.
A phased transition will precede the full integration of NACS ports in 2025, where Mercedes-Benz will offer adapters that will render existing CCS BEVs compatible with the NACS network as early as 2024.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management Mercedes-Benz Group AG, articulated the company's vision, emphasizing their commitment to building world-class vehicles and complementing the driving experience with a robust and efficient charging network. "To accelerate the shift to electric vehicles, we are dedicated to elevating the entire EV-experience for our customers - including fast, convenient, and reliable charging solutions wherever their Mercedes-Benz takes them," Källenius said.
In terms of global reach, the automaker's aspirations extend beyond North America. Mercedes-Benz has charted plans to set up over 2,000 Charging Hubs worldwide, spanning Europe, China, and other key markets by decade-end. This extensive network will comprise more than 10,000 charging points, with the potential for expansion based on market demand. Further reinforcing the brand's commitment to inclusivity, the Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs will be open to all EV brands.
Already making waves in the EV charging realm, Mercedes-Benz customers, via the 'Mercedes me Charge' service, can currently tap into an international network of 1.2 million charging points.
In the words of a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson, the brand's foray into developing its own North American High-Power Charging Network will "redefine the electric vehicle charging experience." They emphasized the company's enduring promise of quality, reputation, and a customer-centric approach that has positioned Mercedes-Benz as a benchmark in the automotive industry for over a century.
In summary, Mercedes-Benz's strategic moves in the EV charging infrastructure space affirm the automaker's commitment to a greener future and a seamless EV driving experience for its consumers.
