How a mild-hybrid system compares to a traditional hybrid engine or a PHEV powertrain

Mild hybrid engines are becoming increasingly more popular. Most automakers offer them as a standard engine now, with hybrid and PHEV options also being available. But what exactly is a mild-hybrid system? And how does it differ from other types of engine? At Mercedes-Benz, the mild-hybrid engine is called EQ Boost and it is featured on multiple engines including the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV and the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

For starters, a mild-hybrid engine is a technology that utilizes a very small electric component, usually a 48-volt battery. This battery can serve to help at startup in order to improve fuel consumption by minimizing the strain on the powertrain when turning on your engine. The mild-hybrid powertrain can also serve to provide quick burst of accelerations and improve performance in specific situations.

Ultimately, mild-hybrid powertrains provide enhanced performance, improved refinement, and optimized fuel economy compared to a traditional gas engine with no electrification. However, the battery is a lot smaller than what you find on a traditional hybrid engine which means that the fuel economy gains aren't as noteworthy. And unlike a plug-in hybrid engine which is an even larger battery, a mild-hybrid system cannot power a vehicle on electricity alone.

The benefits of a mild-hybrid system are that you get enhanced efficiency with the same behaviour as a traditional gas engine and with very little extra cost. For example, the next GLC will offer 258 horsepower and an impressive 295 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the current model. That said, there’s an extra 23 horsepower and an even more impressive 147 pound-feet of torque available should it be needed in the GLC, for example when accelerating.  Give us a call today to learn more about Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost technology.
